Thegyn Sword

This is from the Thegns of Mercia facebook page.  The page is just full of great information. Now I know what color to paint  my swords hilts for my Anglo Saxons.

Presenting "Unsār" - a sword recreation with a difference. Incorporating a faithful reproduction of the mysterious stray 5th century Kragehul-type pommel from Compton-Verney, Warwickshire by our friend Andrew Mason, a simple hilt by member Æd Thompson and sheath based on various early Anglo-Saxon finds.
The pommel (https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/526418) is characteristically 'Germanic' yet astoundingly early in style - supposedly pre-dating the arrival of Anglo-Saxon settlers in this region. Its tempting to imagine how it ended up deep in the Midlands, of all places, alongside the Fosse Way.
What makes this sword recreation so different, though? Keep an eye out for the next post to find out!
